Client Story
From conflicting reports to clarity and reassurance with PHM’s multidisciplinary support.
An employee based in France reached out to PHM for help with his 66-year-old father’s prostate cancer diagnosis. After a rise in prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, biopsies revealed low-grade, low-risk prostate cancer. However, imaging completed at a remote location in France suggested locally advanced disease. This created confusion and distress as it contradicted the biopsy results. This conflicting information raised concerns about the treatment plan, prompting the family to seek additional guidance.
PHM quickly assembled a multidisciplinary team, including clinical, logistical, and research experts, to address the situation. The team immediately began translating historical medical records. Recognizing the urgency, especially with an upcoming consultation with a Paris-based expert, the team immediately provided a tailored list of questions to help optimize the critical consultation. Family members were also given immediate access to a PHM Oncology Clinician to make sure they fully understood the goals of the visit.
As recommended on the question list, the Paris-based expert agreed to pursue more advanced imaging, specifically a PSMA PET scan. The PHM Research Team then created a comprehensive Treatment Option Plan, which reviewed the patient’s diagnosis, treatment options, and prognosis, helping the family member take a more proactive role in his care. PHM’s Care Team reassured the family that further support would be provided when biopsy testing occurred.
With the PHM Approach, the family received immediate reassurance which reinforced their decision to seek a second opinion. They were informed, by their Care Team, that low-grade, low volume localized prostate cancer typically doesn’t present with bilateral lymph node involvement, which reduced also reduced their anxiety.
Tailoring the consultation question list enabled the Paris expert to conduct the appropriate diagnostic work-up, including the PSMA PET scan.
The PHM Care Team’s real-time education and support helped the family make informed decisions, including the option of active surveillance, while also providing reassurance. PHM’s high-touch support—combining emotional, clinical, and personalized research—reduced anxiety and uncertainty during the diagnosis and treatment process, improving the patient’s quality of life during a time of medical uncertainty.
