Client Story
Reframing metastatic cancer to no evidence of disease through precision diagnostics and longitudinal insight.
Presentation
When this client came to PHM, his path seemed set. With a remote history of successfully treated papillary thyroid carcinoma and more recent curative treatment for HPV-positive sinonasal squamous cell carcinoma, new lung lesions and biopsy findings appeared to confirm metastatic disease. His diagnosis abruptly shifted from curative to incurable, bringing the expectation of ongoing systemic therapy, mounting side effects, and significant uncertainty about the future. Yet aspects of the clinical picture didn’t fully align. Faced with a life-altering prognosis and unanswered questions about whether the findings truly reflected active cancer, he sought greater clarity and confidence in his care.
PHM IMPACT
PHM led a comprehensive reassessment of his condition, combining advanced blood-based cancer monitoring with an expert review of more than a decade of prior scans and medical history. Repeated testing showed no evidence of active cancer, while imaging comparisons revealed that the lung lesions had been stable, benign findings for years. By synthesizing molecular, radiologic, and clinical data, we reframed his disease status to no evidence of active cancer. With this clarity, we worked alongside his care team to support a safe de-escalation of therapy and establish a rigorous surveillance strategy—balancing clinical evidence with his quality-of-life priorities.
Outcome
With an accurate understanding of his condition, the client was able to move beyond a metastatic cancer diagnosis and discontinue unnecessary systemic treatment. He transitioned to structured surveillance with continued confidence in sustained remission. Today, he remains without evidence of disease and has returned to work, travel, and daily life—no longer defined by ongoing treatment, but by recovery and restored quality of life.
